Pulmonologists and respiratory healthcare professionals from across Indonesia will gather at Konferensi Kerja PDPI Ke-XVIII, held from 16 to 19 September 2026 at The ZHM Premiere Hotel, Padang. 

Organized by Perhimpunan Dokter Paru Indonesia, the conference carries the theme “Expanding Horizons in Every Breath.” It offers a focused setting to discuss current clinical practice, new technology, and collaboration in respiratory health. 

A Broad Pulmonology Program 

The scientific program covers major areas of respiratory medicine, including asthma and COPD, tuberculosis and other lung infections, interstitial lung disease, thoracic oncology, pulmonary intervention, bronchoscopy, sleep medicine, critical care, stem cells, and hyperbaric medicine. 

Workshops and scientific competitions will give participants additional opportunities to build practical knowledge, exchange clinical perspectives, and connect with colleagues from across Indonesia. 

How HBO₂ Can Support Care Relevant to Pulmonology 

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment, also known as HBO₂, delivers medical oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure raises the amount of oxygen dissolved in plasma, helping oxygen reach tissues affected by hypoxia. 

Its role in pulmonology is limited to specific indications and multidisciplinary cases: 

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning: HBO₂ can accelerate carbon monoxide removal from hemoglobin and improve oxygen delivery to affected tissues. It may be considered in appropriately selected severe cases, including smoke exposure with significant carbon monoxide poisoning. 
  • Air or gas embolism: Increased pressure helps reduce gas-bubble volume, while the higher oxygen level supports tissues affected by interrupted blood flow. This can be relevant after diving incidents or certain invasive medical procedures. 
  • Decompression sickness: HBO₂ helps reduce inert-gas bubbles and improve tissue oxygenation in diving-related illness. 
  • Pulmonary risk assessment: Respiratory specialists can help identify factors that affect HBO₂ safety, including untreated pneumothorax, bullous lung disease, significant air trapping, and impaired carbon dioxide clearance. 

HBO₂ is not a routine treatment for asthma, COPD, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, or lung cancer. However, research into wider respiratory applications is continuing. Every patient requires an established indication, individual assessment, an appropriate protocol, and supervision by qualified medical professionals.
